# Trials

The trials screen answers "how many trialists are in the pipeline, and how many of them convert". A free trial is the moment a store decides whether your app is worth paying for, so the screen tracks every trial that started in the period from its first day to its outcome.

## Where the data comes from

Meridian knows a trial as a fact, not a guess, in two cases:

* **Plans published with the [plan builder](/plans)**: the trial window is recorded the moment the subscription becomes active. See [Free trial](/free-trial).
* **Subscriptions your app bills itself** through the Shopify Billing API: the [SDK](/sdk-app#afterauth) reads them from Shopify at each authentication and reports their trial length. See [Trials on subscriptions you bill yourself](/free-trial#trials-on-subscriptions-you-bill-yourself).

An app that uses neither sees an empty screen, with a note saying which of the two to set up. An app whose trials all started before the selected period sees a different note, with the count of those earlier trials and a prompt to widen the period, because the report selects trials by their start date. A period that ends before today, such as **Yesterday** or a custom range in the past, gets the same kind of note when trials started after it, with a prompt to extend it to today or move it later.

## The two figures

**Trial conversion rate** is the share of ended trials that became paying subscriptions: converted divided by converted plus churned during trial. Trials still running are not in the denominator, so a busy week of new signups does not drag the rate down before those stores have had a chance to decide.

**Active trials** is how many stores are inside their trial right now, next to how many trials started in the period, how many were cancelled during their trial and, when there are any, how many Shopify has frozen.

## The chart

Bars count trials by the day, week or month they started, depending on the period: daily for the last three months, weekly for six or twelve months, monthly for all time. The **Outcome** lens splits each bar into converted and cancelled during trial; the **Pipeline** lens shows the trials still running against those cancelled, with a bar for frozen trials when the period has any. The line is the conversion rate cumulated from the start of the period, on the right axis, so it converges on the figure in the card above rather than jumping between 0 and 100 on days with a single trial. Buckets are in UTC.

## Trial history

The table lists every trial that started in the period, newest first: the store, the plan (with its list price when the plan is one of yours, or the subscription's own name when your app bills it), trial start, trial end, and the status.

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **On trial** | The trial end date is still ahead. |
| **Frozen** | Shopify froze the subscription on or before its trial end, because the store's own Shopify bill went unpaid, and has not unfrozen it since. Shopify does not bill your app while a store is frozen, so the merchant never paid and never decided: the trial is neither converted nor churned and stays out of the conversion rate. Shopify reactivates the subscription by itself once the store pays, and the trial then reads as converted. A subscription frozen after its trial end had already paid, so it stays converted here and counts as churn on the [Churn](/analytics-churn) screen. |
| **Converted** | The subscription survived its trial end. A store that cancelled after the trial ended counts as converted here, and as churn on the [Churn](/analytics-churn) screen. |
| **Churned during trial** | The subscription was cancelled, expired or declined on or before its trial end. |

Search by store name or domain and filter by status. The table is a "who is trialling" report rather than an export, so it is capped at the 500 most recent trials; the figures above it always cover the whole period.

## Filters

The period selects trials by their **start date**, so a trial that started in March and converted in April belongs to March. The [segment](/segments) chip narrows every figure to the stores it matches. Test stores are excluded unless you include them, using the same inference as the rest of the CRM: a store whose charges are Shopify test charges is a test store.

## In the Report Builder

The same trials are also a dataset in the [Report Builder](/report-builder), named **Trials**, for the questions this screen does not answer: trials by plan, by currency, by Shopify status, by a [custom field](/custom-fields), or restricted to a saved [segment](/segments). It carries the trial start and end dates, the trial status (with the same four values as the table above, computed by the same rule), the plan and subscription name, and measures for trials, on trial, frozen, converted, churned during trial, the conversion rate and the average trial length. The conversion rate uses the same denominator as this screen: trials still running or frozen are left out.

## Acting on it

A trial that is about to end is also an [automation trigger](/automations): **trial expiring** fires a set number of days before the end date, and **trial expired** fires once it passes, so a nudge or a check-in does not wait for someone to read this screen. The one-trial-per-store rule is explained in [Free trial](/free-trial#one-trial-per-store).
