# Keywords

Keyword tracking shows where your listing lands in App Store search. Pick the queries merchants actually type, and Meridian snapshots those search results once a day: your position, how it moved, and who's above you.

Tracking needs a [linked listing](/app-store-listing): Meridian has to know which listing to look for in the results.

## Tracking a term

Add a keyword exactly as a merchant would type it. You get **five keyword slots** per listing; the counter shows how many are in use.

Tracking starts immediately, but positions come from the nightly crawl, so a new keyword shows *First snapshot tomorrow* until the next run: the search crawl kicks off in the small hours UTC and positions land the following morning.

## Reading a keyword

Each keyword shows its current position out of the top 120, its change over 1 day and 7 days, its best position so far, how many apps match the term, and a chart of every position since tracking began.

If your listing isn't in the top 120, Meridian says so rather than guessing, and keeps snapshotting, so it reappears the day it ranks again. When it ranked before, the last seen position and date are kept.

Open a keyword to see the **full leaderboard** for that term: the ranked apps with their rating, pricing and page, your own app highlighted, and the change against the previous day. Paid placements are shown beside the organic results but kept out of the ranked list, so a position always means an organic one.

## How the snapshots work

* **One snapshot a day.** Every tracked keyword is run once per nightly crawl and the whole leaderboard stored: the top 120 organic results, five pages of 24.
* **The same results for everyone.** App Store search isn't personalised, so the snapshot you see is the one merchants see; no account, region or history skews it.
* **Trends are the signal.** A single day is one point, and moves of a rank or two are noise. A week pulling one way is the thing worth acting on.

## Stopping a keyword

Stopping tracking frees the slot and stops the daily snapshot, but keeps the history you've already collected. Add the same keyword again later and tracking resumes on the same chart, with a gap for the days in between.
