One-time charge activated (subscription.one_time_charge_activated) fires when a store completes a one-off purchase from your app (a credit pack, a setup fee, an add-on) as opposed to a recurring subscription.
When it fires
From Shopify’s app_purchases_one_time/update webhook, and only when the purchase’s status is ACTIVE. Every other status on that webhook (pending, declined, expired) is ignored, so the trigger means “the merchant paid”, not “the merchant started to pay”.
What it carries
The store’s variables, plus one event variable:
charge_name is the name Shopify carries for the purchase, so an email can name what was bought without you hardcoding it per flow.
Building on it
- Send a receipt-style confirmation naming the purchase with
{{charge_name}}.
- Branch on
charge_name with a variable condition to fulfil different products in different ways.
- Record the purchase in a custom field so your CRM and reports can see who bought what.
